rain was heavier now. She could hear it drumming on the roof. She felt a little surge of pride at the deduction. Being observant was what being an artist was all about.

The man walked over to a desk, opened the folder, and pulled out several large sheets of paper. They were covered with black-and-white panels and illustrations. Pages of art for the comic. They would be reduced in size when they were printed onto the page. Alicia craned closer, trying to catch a glimpse, but even at this size they were too far away.

“New artwork from Grendel,” the man called. “You hear me, you pestilent bunch? I want this in the next issue!” His voice was high and he had a slight lisp: not at all the voice she would have expected from someone so large.

Nobody had paid any attention to him until that point. Now one of the workers came shuffling over and began to examine the pages.

“Make sure you get them in the right order this time, you moronic little scab,” the man instructed. The worker merely nodded, as if he hadn’t heard the insult. He picked up the sheets and carried them over to a battered scanner.

The man in the fedora surveyed the room. “Pathetic, all of you,” he said. “I’m heading back to Crouch Hollow now. Not that anyone cares.” He waited for a response, but he was ignored. “Yes, Mr. Scratch!” he said, talking to himself in a falsetto voice. “Thank you for bringing us some new artwork, Mr. Scratch!” When nobody answered, he reverted to his usual tone. “Odious mongrels!” he snarled, and stamped off.

Alicia’s heart was in her mouth. So that was Icarus Scratch! She recognized the name — Seth had given her the license plate number of his car. He was heading to some place called Crouch Hollow. By the sound of it, that was where Grendel was, and even she knew that Grendel was the artist behind Malice.

She found herself seized by an idea. If Scratch was here, that meant his car was here. And if his car was here . . .

She had no time to debate it in her head. If she didn’t act now, the chance would be gone. The trail would end here. She hadn’t learned enough to stop the comic yet.

She hurried to the door that led back into the stairwell, pulled it open, and almost screamed as she found herself face- to-face with one of the workers.

Her hand flew to her mouth. She was caught!

He was a thin, unhealthy-looking man in his thirties, with thatchy stubble and hair that looked like he’d just gotten out of bed. He was wearing the same boilersuit as the rest of them.

There was no trace of surprise on his face. He gazed at her blankly with watery gray eyes. Alicia, terrified, didn’t dare to move.

Then the man’s gaze shifted away, and he walked past her, without saying a word.

Alicia couldn’t believe it. She stared at his back as he ambled slowly along the walkway.
